Let me begin by telling you a bit about this Kentville landmark, known as Phinneys. The store was first opened in 1922 by Lewis Phinney. At the time, the store was known as “Everything For The Dad & The Lad”. Some time later, Lewis passed the store down to his son Wendell, who ran the store until 1976 until retiring from the clothing business. Wendell sold the store to one of his employees. Wendell served as Mayor of the town of Kentville from 1973 – 1988.

As a young boy, I grew up watching my parents run their clothing stores. I always knew I wanted to follow in their footsteps and use the tools they taught me along the way. For almost 20 years, I had a successful store in New Minas. In 2013, I was able to purchase the iconic Phinneys building on Webster Street in Kentville. After having a store in a mall for nearly 2 decades, I instantly loved being downtown. I listened to the customers and began making changes slowly to the store.

We brought Phinneys into the 21st century by renovating and adding some great new brands to the mix. When I took over ownership of Phinneys, I inherited two loyal, long-standing employees: Mary Buchanan and Barb Wood. These two women have been bringing light into Phinneys for many years, and I’m so fortunate to work in their company on a daily basis. Mary’s been with the store for more than 20 years, and she knows absolutely everybody. Barb, our seamstress, has been with the store for more than 30 years. If anyone needs alterations in a hurry, she’s here to help them. We extend our expert tailoring service outside our doors to offer complete alteration services.

My father opened his first store in Hantsport in 1961 and to this day I carry my Father’s words of wisdom, if it’s not quality, don’t sell it. My mother, Mary spent her lifetime catering to the public in their stores and both of my parents always reinforced the value of good customer service, “it doesn’t matter what you have, if you can’t serve people properly. We have a great team here at Phinneys. I can’t forget my beautiful team at home; my beautiful wife, Mariam and our three children, Dalia, Nadia & Ibrahim. You’ll sometimes find Dalia roaming around, she’s our little mascot greeting customers.

We hope you will visit Kentville and drop by Phinneys, it will definitely be worth the visit.
